Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday because of a strained right hip.
Torres was removed after striking out in his second at-bat in the fourth inning before the Yankees went on to beat the Atlanta Braves 6-2.
Before the series finale against the National League East leaders Youth Royce Freeman Jersey , Yankees manager Aaron Boone was upbeat about the status of his prized rookie.
Torres did not start in Tuesday nights win, but entered the game late as a defensive replacement.
Were hoping its a short stint. But we think weve got to deal with it this time because there is a small strain there, Boone said outside the home clubhouse after the game.
Hopefully it wont be something that its too long. Probably take us up to the All-Star break.
Boone said the club would assess the situation with a day off Thursday before heading to Toronto for the start of an 11-game, three-city road trip leading into the All-Star Game in Washington.
Torres is hitting .294 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs in his first 63 major league games.
He had an MRI and was not available to talk to reporters after the game.
Neil Walker, who went over from third base to second at the start of the fifth inning, could get most of the work in Torres absence.
Another option could be Ronald Torreyes, but hes been on the temporary inactive list at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for more than a week to deal with a personal issue. Brandon Drury, who started 114 games at second for Arizona last season, could also figure into the mix.
Boone wasnt sure how the injury initially occurred, pointing out that Torres had made some good base running plays a couple of nights ago when he moved up on some wild pitches.
The Yankees manager also added that if the injury had occurred late in the season, it wouldve been possible for the phenom to be back on the field shortly.
But the team with the second-best record in baseball took the safe route.
Anytime youre talking about groin, hamstring, quads, once you have a strain in there, you push through it you can make it a worse strain, Boone said.
And now youre talking weeks and months. Stuff like that. So I think the wise thing is to do this now. Gleyber wants to take a couple of days, work through it. But I think he also understands this is the best thing for him and for us.

Jay Ajayi, former Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount and Corey Clement led the NFLs third-best rushing offense and the Eagles were first in time of possession.

This isnt an old-school Youth J'Mon Moore Jersey , ground-and-pound offense, either.
The Eagles have a versatile passing attack with several receivers who create matchup problems. Carson Wentz threw for 3,296 yards and 33 touchdown passes before he tore his ACL in Week 14 and Nick Foles has eight TD passes, including playoffs.
Foles proved in the NFC championship game he can make quick-strike plays with three passes of 40-plus yards against the leagues top-ranked defense. Two of those were TD tosses of 53 yards to Alshon Jeffery and 41 yards to Torrey Smith.
Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz and slot receiver Nelson Agholor are other options. Tight end Trey Burton, who also lines up at fullback in certain short-yardage situations, had five TD catches this season.
You cant just stop one guy, Patriots safety Devin McCourty said. You cant go out there and say, `if we just limit Jeffery or if we just limit Ertz that wont matter. They have a lot of different guys out there that can beat you.
Foles has been adept at making the right calls on run-pass option plays, making it even more difficult for defenses facing Philadelphia.
Its hard because you have to defend every inch of the field, McCourty said. Each guy has to do their job on the play. We cant have guys doing things that dont fit the defense.
On the opposite side of the ball, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has an aggressive unit. Nobody runs on Philadelphias defense. It was No. 1 against the run and didnt allow a 100-yard rusher until Ezekiel Elliott had 103 in Week 17 against backups and third-stringers.
The Patriots (15-3) rely mainly on Bradys arm, even though Dion Lewis had 896 yards rushing and James White was a Super Bowl hero last year. But Brady cant throw if he doesnt have time and the Eagles have a dominant front four led by Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham.
The line often generates enough pressure that Schwartz doesnt have to blitz much and theres enough depth with Chris Long, Vinny Curry, Tim Jernigan and Beau Allen that guys stay fresh in the fourth quarter.
Safety Malcolm Jenkins is a physical presence in the secondary and cornerbacks Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills are solid cover guys.
They have a great defense, Brady said. Its as good any weve faced all year. They have a great scheme that mixes in well with their coverages.
If the game comes down to a field goal, rookie kicker Jake Elliott has a strong leg. He kicked a 61-yarder at the end of regulation to beat the Giants in Week 3 and is 6 of 7 from beyond 50 yards.
The Eagles shouldnt be tight and theyre not intimidated by the Patriots. Theyre a loose, relaxed group that has embraced their underdog role throughout the playoffs and overcame injuries to several key players.
Greatest quarterback of all time, but that doesnt mean that hes unbeatable, Jenkins said of Brady. Were not worried. We match up well.
