Turkey is a regional powerhouse, strong enough to speak on equal terms with Russia, China and the United States. Ankara is actively defending its interests in the region, has satellites and will not stop until it has finally established its sphere of influence. However, it seems that most EU countries, other regional powers and the United States itself, simply fail to understand what the Turks really want. The premiere of the documentary «The Dying Empire», which brought together leading Turkish political scientists, also reflects the general mood now prevalent in Turkey.
Meanwhile, Ankara realizes that the American empire is beginning to collapse with a chain of Democratic and Republican presidents moving in and out of the White House and trying to set a new course for America clearly unable to do it any good. Turkey, for many years a semi-colony of the West, perceives the liberalism of the current US administration, which claims to bring America “back,” just as a "politically correct" imperialism with double standards, when Washington does not stand up for the rights of women and sexual minorities in its allied Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, but is always ready to cry foul about "violations of civil liberties" by its opponents.
One serious headache for Turkey are two influential diasporas - Greek and Armenian, both of them longtime Biden supporters in the state of Delaware, where the positions of these ethnic minorities are particularly strong. Therefore, the Turkish political establishment sees Erdogan's support for Baku during the recent Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict as a powerful slap in the face of the current occupant of the White House.
Also, Ankara is taking very seriously the plans of the RAND analytical company with close links to the Democratic Party, which in January presented a detailed report on the overthrow of the Erdogan "regime." This is already a direct threat to Turkish independence and statehood, just like Biden’s attempts to ensure the creation of a Kurdish state. For Turkish politicians this automatically turns the United States into an enemy.
At the same time, Ankara is fully aware of the plethora of problems now facing the United States. Imperfect “digital” democracy, political foul play, corruption, the case of Biden’s son, who landed a lucrative job on the board of a Ukrainian corporation - all this has long and effectively undermined America’s reputation in Turkey. Add to this the Clinton clan's lobbying, which helped Middle Eastern and Pakistani businessmen evade justice. At the same time, the Democrats’ corruption is an affront to modern-day Turkey, which has a long and painful history of rooting out deep-seated traditions of bribery inherent in the Ottoman Empire and where the United States was looked upon as a role model for that anticorruption effort. If we add to this NATO's inability to respond to the threats that Turkey is facing from the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which, being an enemy of a NATO member, actually becomes an ally of Washington, it becomes clear that Erdogan and his associates simply cannot perceive the United States as an ally. Therefore, Turkish political scientists openly talk about a Turkish revolt within NATO.
The approach of such an influential power as Turkey to foreign policy just can’t be ignored. However, it seems that European and American politicians just couldn’t care less about the interests and mentality of their ally. This documentary may be one of the last attempts to bring home to Ankara’s partners what “Turkish truth” really is all about...
